We are world leaders in energetic materials technology with established links to many of the recognised research centres and academic institutions in both the UK and abroad. We have a highly experienced team of engineers and scientists who work with government and other industry partners to research and develop a wide range of pyrotechnic and high energy products.
Our core capabilities in pyrotechnics and explosive materials, in combination with our wide ranging engineering skills, provide facilities which can confront the most difficult and challenging objectives.
Our Engineering & Technology centres in the UK and Germany boast a highly skilled team of 50 staff, from technician level through to engineering graduates and PhD qualified energetic materials scientists. The team specialises in engineering, chemistry, physics, computer modeling, data acquisition and analysis.
We offer full expertise and research and development facilities in the following areas and these can be made available to external customers in both defence and civilian industries. |

Pyrotechnic Design.
Formulation, testing and qualification of new stores to provide deployment, delay, smoke, noise or light effects. Products are modelled on 3D CAD and rapid prototyping is used to optimise the parts and ensure that products reach their intended market in a timely fashion.
We work to the latest international standards such as STANAGs, MIL STDs and IMO SOLAS regulations. Particular emphasis for our military range of products is on IM Compliance. Our design activities are carried out in accordance with our BS EN ISO 9001:2000 registration.
Automation Chemring Defence have a number of automated production lines offering benefits of sustained product quality through capabilities such as electronic picture processing, computer - controlled operations and other monitoring systems. A number of Chemring Defences simulators are manufactured on the most advanced production line for simulating ammunition world wide. |

Smokes and Obscurants
We are specialists in design and manufacture of products for visual and infra-red screening using latest formulations in red phosphorus. We can also offer low toxicity smoke formulations.

Environmental Test
Explosive licensed climatic and dynamic testing of pyrotechnic and explosive articles:
> Hot and Cold conditioning, +180 deg C to -75 deg C.
> Thermal cycling
> Humidity
> Sine and Random Vibration
> Classical shock / bump
> Water immersion (to 1m depth)
> Drop tests (15m)
Access to many other environmental facilities such as salt spray, high altitude simulation, bounce testing, acceleration, dust and sand and slow / fast cook off available through Chemring sister companies.

Energetic Material Characterisation
Our facilities enable safety and compatibility testing to be carried out on pyrotechnic and explosive formulations using DSC and other dedicated equipment.
Chemical Laboratories
Well equipped laboratories for composition development and prototype product manufacture.

Test Facilities and Range
Infrared and velocity measurement in indoor and outdoor ranges. Licensed to fire up to 0.5kg of HE.
